Meet the Board: Spotlight on the Programs Director

June 26, 2014

Do you know your Board? In the latest of a continuing series on the SMPS Boston Board of Directors, we’re focusing on the Director of the Programs Committee, Mike Comtois. Mike not only led the Committee for 2013-2014, he will be making his triumphant return in 2014-2015!

Mike Comtois is a Business Development Manager with Rolf Jensen and Associates (RJA). He initially heard about SMPS through his previous employer, RDK Engineers, who highly recommended joining the organization. In September of 2011 he attended his first SMPS event, Back to Business, on the roof deck at Legal Seafood. That event hooked Mike, and he subsequently became a member and joined the Programs Committee.

When asked how his career path led him to the AEC industry, Mike replied, “I studied Mathematics and Communications in school, so I guess I had a little background in both engineering through mathematics and marketing through communications.”  Originally interested in pursuing a career in Sports Statistics and Research, Mike found that finding a job in that field was proving difficult. He knew that he did not want to move back home after graduation, so he applied for a marketing and communications specialist position with a construction manager firm, and was offered the position.

Although he did not end up in a sports related career, Mike is very active and spends his free time participating in a variety of sports. He plays on four softball teams, a basketball team, and a volleyball team. He has a five-month-old pit bull puppy that he brings to games for moral support and the occasional calming pet. Another sport that Mike enjoys is golf — he participates in golf tournaments and in his spare time, practices to continuously improve his game. Go Mike!
