Five Reasons Why YOU Should Apply for the SMPS Boston Board of Directors

March 28, 2014

Today’s post is brought to us by SMPS Boston’s President, Sarah McGillicuddy. Sarah is the Director of Marketing and Business Development for Acentech.

The official call for Executive Committee and Director-at-Large positions for the SMPS Boston Board of Directors is out and due on April 11th!  The Board offers fantastic opportunities for those who want to grow their network and amplify their professional development. This year, we have a number of open positions, and based on interest, we may even create some new Board positions. Nothing is predetermined, and we are looking to engage an enthused group. If you think you might benefit, I encourage you to throw your hat into the ring! I’ve highlighted below what I feel to be some very important benefits of joining the Board.

Amplify Your Professional Development
Oftentimes in our positions, we find ourselves pigeonholed into certain tasks or roles. Depending on where you are in your career, the size of your firm, and a host of other factors, it can be difficult to gain exposure to a wide variety of skills and responsibilities. Joining the Board provides you with access to experiences that your current role may not. Why is this important? Because when you are ready to evolve in your current role or take on elevated responsibilities, having served on the Board will give you the confidence you need to take your career to the next level.

Managing a budget, leading a group of volunteers, building consensus, public speaking, problem solving, and overall leadership are all skills you will grow and develop as an SMPS Board member.

For example, as Director of the Programs Committee, it was my responsibility at each program to introduce the panelists, often to a room of 150 people or more. Every time, this terrified me! I don’t think I ever slept more than two hours the night before a breakfast program. However, with each program, it got a little easier. One day, a Senior Executive from my company was in attendance at one of our programs. Afterwards, he approached me and said, “Wow! I had no idea you were running this whole show and leading this program. Well done, impressive!” It was a small gesture, but it meant the world to me and further cemented my confidence and belief that my efforts within SMPS were worth the time and the sometimes sleepless nights. Public speaking still makes me nervous, but whether I’m in a meeting or in front of a podium, I’ve found my voice through SMPS, and that is not a skill I would have developed had I not joined the Board of Directors.

A Great Way to Give Back
I often hear from friends and professional colleagues that they wish their jobs were more emotionally rewarding–that they could go to bed at night feeling like they’d done more than just helping to increase their company’s bottom line. SMPS is constantly finding new and different ways to enrich the community we serve. Through scholarships, donations, community service, and charitable partnerships, SMPS is committed to giving back. In addition to philanthropic efforts, SMPS is dedicated to advancing the mission of SMPS and investing in our membership. As Board members, you will collectively decide on what causes and initiatives you want to advance.

Grow Your Network and Engage in Business Development
Serving on the Board will immediately increase your network. You will build relationships with professional colleagues as you work toward common goals, innovate solutions to challenges as a team, and learn along the way. Serving on the Board has been a wonderful experience for me. It also reinforces my company’s brand each and every time I speak at an event or attend a Board meeting.

Aside from the physical representation of your company, building relationships with fellow Board members can help your personal or firm’s business in countless ways. I have made numerous referrals this year to fellow Board members or their respective firms. Additionally, I network with some of them on business leads or have sought introductions to members of their network.

The most value I receive from the Board is through sharing success and failures.  We have all learned from one another and can often vet ideas or business solutions by simply asking one another.

Gain an Operational Perspective
Serving on the Board of Directors will give you exposure to the operational challenges and elements critical to the success of running an organization. Ethical decisions, governance, interpreting bylaws, fiscal responsibilities, and administrative tasks will all be part of your responsibility as a Board member. This all-encompassing exposure will educate you on the importance of all facets of a business. Developing a deeper understanding of what it takes to run a successful organization will make you a more valuable member of your company.

Earn Additional Income!
Ha, I wish! But in seriousness, through joining the Board you will be rich with long-lasting friendships, contacts, and skills you didn’t have before.

Joining the Board is a decision that I promise you won’t regret!
