Meet the Board: Spotlight on the President Elect, Treasurer, and Secretary!

Do you know who is behind all of the programming that SMPS Boston puts on? We’re working on introducing you to the Board of Directors for the Chapter through short bios and links to longer articles about each person’s role on their committee. We hope you enjoy “meeting” your Board!

This month, we want to make sure you know the SMPS Boston Executive Committee! This five-person subset of the Board of Directors are in charge of managing the entire Chapter – coordinating between all the committees, managing our finances and commitments, and keeping us on track to meet our strategic goals. You’ve already met our President, Sarah McGillicuddy, and Past President, Rebecca Maloney, CPSM, LEED AP – now it’s time to meet President Elect, Benjamin Sawa; Secretary, Jennifer Hegarty; and Treasurer, Doug Larence.

As Vice President of the Boston Chapter, Ben Sawa says he is “not your typical marketer” and took a “unique career path.” After earning a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Geology from the University of Vermont, Ben began working in the geotechnical engineering division at GEI Consultants. He always possessed an interest in operations, finance, and technology, so he decided to pursue a Master’s in Administration degree at Boston College while continuing to work full-time at GEI. After earning his MA degree, he transferred to GEI’s corporate division where his responsibilities now include: strategic marketing, corporate finance, operations, and organizational development. It is through GEI that Ben learned about SMPS Boston – after attending some of our events with the marketing staff, he wanted to give back. Jennifer Hegarty, Secretary of SMPS Boston, didn’t always plan to become a marketer for professional services, but her path from academic art historian to Marketing Manager for Boston architecture firm Payette was guided by her passion for visual art and the written word. After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Printmaking with a minor in English, she headed to the University of Massachusetts, Amherst to get a Master’s degree in Art History. Jennifer went on to concentrate in Architectural History; this interest in architecture helped spur her to transition from the academic world to join Payette as a Visual Resources Coordinator. Through her participation in SMPS, Jennifer grew from a rookie marketer to an industry leader, while earning promotions that led to her current role executing Payette’s marketing and communications strategy. Driven is the best word to describe Doug Larence, Marketing Manager at GUND Partnership. Doug studied business as an undergrad at Bryant University with a concentration in marketing and held several different professional services marketing jobs before joining the AEC industry. When he joined SMPS in 2008, he immediately started participating in the Programs Committee, was the Chair for a year, Director for two years, and is now the Chapter’s Treasurer.
