Dear Chapter,

2014Happy 2014! With the dawn of a new year now seems to be a perfect opportunity to highlight the current theme of SMPS Boston – RENEW! After our planning sessions over the summer and commitment to three goals the BOD decided upon the theme of renewal. SMPS Boston is a long-standing chapter and as is the case with any established institution there are peaks and valleys. It’s important not to let things get stale and to evolve with landscape of the membership you serve. This year we have a renewed focus on maintaining and increasing our membership, increasing our programmatic offerings, and reengaging those members within the first ten years of their career.  In concert with these goals we have hosted two fantastic programs and have an innovative and informative panel presentation on lean construction planned for January 29th. Additionally, we have successfully kicked off our building leaders series and are in the midst of an exceptional membership promotion ($200 off for new members!).

From our exciting awards gala to be hosted at The Taj, the newly imagined New England Regional Conference, the renewal of our marketing bootcamp, to hosting SMPS National this June, there is a lot on tap in the coming months. Below are some notes on what you can expect in 2014 from SMPS Boston!

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

The executive committee, led by Sarah McGillicuddy (Acetench), President; Ben Sawa (GEI), President-Elect; Rebecca Maloney (Arup), Immediate Past President; Jennifer Hegarty (Payette), Secretary; and Doug Larence (GUND Partnership), Treasurer is committed to investing to our chapter this year as well as putting a greater focus on charity. To support this goal SMPS Boston will be making a $5,000 donation to Renovate for Recovery (to help in the recovery process for those physically affected by the Boston Marathon bombings) and providing several CPSM sponsorships, and sponsorships to our Marketing Bootcamp. Additionally, the executive committee is interested in tapping into the wonderful talents and insights of our vibrant chapter volunteers. The Chapter will be hosting a Town Hall style meeting for all SMPS committee members and a post meeting reception to honor their contributions and learn more about how to serve the chapter. The executive committee has also connected with our network of past presidents in order to reconnect with the past leadership of Boston’s chapter as well as to tap into their collective knowledge.

EDUCATION

Led by Krista Sykes, Founder of Architecture in Context, the Education Committee is excited to host an array of events for all levels of marketing professionals in 2014. The Education Committee will round out the Building Leaders Series with informative programs on finance for marketers (January), graphic design fundamentals (March), and ideas for capturing and presenting your firm’s projects (June). In February we offer a lunch tutorial covering Excel tips and tricks and an evening BD Live client panel. In April we will run a one-day intensive program Marketing Boot Camp, building on the success of last year’s inaugural event. We look forward to seeing you at some–or all–of these events. And don’t forget to attend the Mix@6 for a chance to share good conversation and food with fellow SMPS members!

COMMUNICATIONS

The Communications Committee, led by Anna Luciano of Nitsch Engineering, is looking to the future, beginning to plan improvements to our website to make it more helpful for our members and friends. If you have any ideas, write them down – they’ll be asking for user feedback from you soon! They’re also hard at work finding great marketing content for Outlook (this blog!). If you’re interested in writing a piece (or a series) on a topic that you think would be of interest to the A/E/C marketing community, let us know!

MEMBERSHIP

The Membership Committee, led by Doug Reed of Foster Growth Biz, has a lot of fun and accomplishes a lot to support SMPS Boston, which has close to 300 members, and represents one of the largest SMPS chapters in the country. The membership committee focuses on member retention and recruitment.  The membership committee is always interested in growing with the help of new talented and involved volunteers — please email or call Committee Director, Doug Reed to discuss (douglasreed@fostergrowth.biz, 617-758-7000) if interested.     Membership recently completed their major membership event, the Holiday Party, at the Boston College Club of Boston. In addition to connecting with SMPS Boston members and ringing in the New Year together SMPS Boston donated a plethora of clothes for the Big Brother Big Sister Foundation.   Membership is excited to share that we are well into our new member incentive program that provides a $200 rebate toward the expense of annual membership dues. This is a limited time offer so let your non-member friends know!

AWARDS

The Awards Committee, led by Rebecca Roy of Bond Brothers, is hard at work making the 2014 ROC Awards program better than ever! We are excited to announce that our annual Gala will be held at the Taj Boston on June 5, 2014, with Judy Nitsch, Founding Principal and Chairman of Nitsch Engineering as the evening’s distinguished emcee. To facilitate an easier and greener awards entry process, our committee is “renewing” our submission process, requesting online submissions in lieu of the printed binder requirement of years past. We are also placing a stronger emphasis on New Member of the Year and Marketing Professional of the Year, starting these campaigns earlier to ensure that the best and most qualified candidates are recognized.

PROGRAMS

The Programs Committee, led by Mike Comtois of RDK, has been working hard to bring the members of SMPS Boston a great slate of programs for the upcoming 2014 year. Our focus on timely topics and the latest trends affecting the A/E/C industry will start off at the end of January with The LEAN Design and Construction Journey where our all-star panel will provide attendees with accounts of applying LEAN to the design and construction process and why they will continue to use this process on upcoming projects. Other events to be on the lookout for in the next few months include an Energy & Sustainability Summit and an update on the Boston Transportation Market. CPSM

The CPSM Committee, led by Jennifer Shelby of Rhino PR, is actively seeing candidates to participate in the 2014 CPSM Study Group. This 8-session schedule involves in-depth reading and discussions pertaining to SMPS’s six domains of professional practice.  By becoming certified, marketers not only cement their commitment to their craft, but gain the support and resources of the national organization of professional marketers from whom they can seek advice and knowledge. The certification provides a benchmark upon which all marketing activities can be measured. Please consider taking the exam and adding your name to the growing list of Boston CPSMs.

OTHER NEWS

The UBER

The reimagined New England Regional Conference (NERC), aka the UBER kicks off for this first time this spring! The conference now includes nine SMPS chapters representing 1350 members—Northern New England, Boston, Connecticut, Upstate New York, New York City, Philadelphia, Central Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Washington, DC—harnessing their strength for maximum impact to benefit the A/E/C professionals and firms in this region. SMPS National Comes to Boston

SMPS National will be coming to Boston on June 3rd to lead their infamous Business Development workshop. Whether you’re a new or seasoned business developer, “The Basics of Business Development” will provide you with the skills and tools to build more business for your firm in any economy. Led by seasoned, active A/E/C practitioners with responsibility for bottom-line contractual results, this program will strengthen your business development skills to position your firm for success in 2014. During this interactive, day-long workshop you will gain the special skills, techniques, and tools necessary to develop and maintain a successful business development program for your professional services firm.
