Looking Back and Forward

August 20, 2013

A Letter from SMPS Boston President, Rebecca Maloney, CPSM, LEED AP, Marketing and Business Development Manager, Arup

As the summer ends, so does our SMPS program year. It has been a privilege to serve as president for 2012/13, and I am excited about what our society has accomplished this year. Highlights include:

  • After a long hiatus, marketing bootcamp is back! What a pleasure it was to see so many people new to their roles or the AEC industry building their skills and networks in this day-long educational event.
  • The newly created CPSM committee started with a bang! This year’s study group has not only provided a strong network for attendees, but five members have already earned their CPSM designation – and I’m sure more will follow.
  • Our educational events have record attendance and are inspiring our industry – from marketing coordinators to firm principals.
  • And we get together afterwards to Mix@Six, providing a great networking opportunity for our event attendees.
  • We have been hard at work planning the SMPS Uber Conference – a new regional that includes chapters from the Mid-Atlantic on up. Stay tuned for more information… and don’t miss the call for presentations that is out right now!
  • We gave back. SMPS Boston joined AAREP New England, BSA, CoreNet Global New England, NAIOP Massachusetts, NEWiRE, and ULI Boston on April 10th for Community Connect, a volunteer event to support Cradles to Crayons. We also hosted a Clothing Drive to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters and supported our community in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon Bombing with a donation to One Fund Boston.
  • We organized informal educational opportunities at no cost to members around conference tables over lunch or to view recent SMPS webinars.
  • We listed 52 jobs on the SMPS Boston Job Bank, helping our members continue to grow their careers!
  • We celebrated our successes at the ROC (Recognizing Outstanding Communications) Awards Gala, our most popular event of the year!
  • We thanked our 2012-2013 sponsors – who make everything we do possible! – at the Summer Social at the Daily Catch.

As president, I have had the opportunity to hear a lot of stories about the value so many find in this organization. Most consistently, I hear that people appreciate the learning opportunities we provide, the connections we make across the AEC industry, and the strong network that one can build as a member of SMPS. I couldn’t agree more.

So thank you. To the volunteers who work so hard on behalf of our society, to our sponsors who support us financially, and to the members and non-members who make attending our events a priority. We did this together. We have made SMPS the organization it is today.

As for tomorrow, we have an amazing, talented and committed group of leaders on the board and committees this year. With Sarah Cotter McGillicuddy at the helm for 2013-2014, we are sure to have a great year!  Now is a great time to consider how you might become more involved this year – volunteer, sponsor, join us! We look forward to seeing you.
