Meet the Board: Spotlight on the CPSM & Membership Directors

April 16, 2013

Do you know who is behind all of the programming that SMPS Boston puts on? Over the next couple months, we’ll be introducing you to the Board of Directors for the Chapter through short bios and links to longer articles about each person’s role on their committee. We hope you enjoy “meeting” your Board!

We’re kicking off the series by spotlighting Jennifer Shelby, CPSM – CPSM Director, and Douglas Reed, PE – Membership Director.

This year’s CPSM Study Group has been our most well-attended group to date, and Valerie Conyngham’s Diary of a CPSM Candidate series on this blog has been getting some great feedback. But do you know the person behind the scenes who has been working to manage this entire process? Meet Jennifer Shelby, CPSM! Jennifer began her two-year term as CPSM Director in fall of 2012, but she managed the program for a year before that as part of the Education Committee.  Now that the CPSM Committee is a stand-alone committee, Jennifer is working to provide a greater focus on the program with the intention of increasing the number of CPSMs within SMPS Boston. Together with her committee, her plan is to provide informational sessions, and to use the website, blog, and e-marketing to build awareness of the program, recruit candidates, and mentor individuals throughout the exam process. Jennifer has been active in SMPS Boston since 2005, and is a consistent presence at SMPS events. You can read more about her professional background and her interests outside of work by clicking here (full bio posted on our website).

The Membership Committee is in charge of recruiting new members and showing them how to get the most out of their membership, aiding with member retention, and providing networking opportunities for existing members. As part of this effort, the committee plans and coordinates the SMPS Boston social events, including the fall networking event, the Holiday party, and other member social activities. Douglas Reed, PE, began serving on this committee following a successful run as Chair of ACEC/MA’s membership committee. Under Doug’s leadership, the SMPS Boston Membership Committee has focused on welcoming new members and making sure they are exposed to the benefits of the Boston Chapter; they do this by communicating directly with new members and organizing social activities and charity activities for members and potential members. In addition, the Committee has started a formal program to identify and communicate with potential members who would benefit from SMPS membership. Doug has been involved in the AEC industry since childhood, and has evolved from an industry fan to an engineer to a marketing consultant over that time. You can read more about his background and interests by clicking here (full bio posted on our website).

More bios will be posted soon – so stay tuned!
