This is Your Year

September 16, 2010

A Letter from SMPS Boston President, Matt Hawk

"If not now, then when? If not you, then who?" ~John F. Kennedy, Jr.

This is your year. How are you going to make it great? SMPS is unlike other architecture, engineering, and construction associations. We are a grassroots organization. For 30 years, the SMPS Boston Chapter has relied on volunteers to be the source for education, team building, and strategic and marketing information for our members and their firms. This is a call for volunteers.

The chapter has won an award for our ability to perform for three consecutive years, but it isn’t enough. Creative volunteerism is what I have come to expect from chapter members. Built for others, our goal is to provide opportunities for marketers at all levels of their career. It starts by making available basic training for young professionals, then subject matter for our mid-level members to become stronger leaders and managers, to high-level trending information and ways to give back to the chapter to our senior members.

Your board has been working through the summer to plan and execute processes, events and programs that we hope will provide you with what you need for the 2010-2011 program year. This year the Boston Chapter hosts the regional conference, which is an exciting event to plan. If you’re looking to make an impression on more than 500 regional SMPS members, then get involved with this event. January will mark the 30th year of the chapter’s incorporation and we will embark upon a membership growth program. We have won an award for three consecutive years, but have not won the Striving for Excellence Chapter of the Year.

The Board of Directors, Committees and volunteers have a lot to do. We are up to the challenge, and we need your help. If you are not involved with a committee, join one. If you are not sure which one, contact me – my information is below.
