Out and About: VAPIANO

September 2, 2010

There are a lot of restaurants in the Theater District, so if you’d said that a completely different place was going to open in the old Bennigan’s space, we wouldn’t have believed you. But VAPIANO was a pleasant surprise.

VAPIANO, with its cafeteria-style food and lounge-like atmosphere, is a great spot to grab a quick bite to eat in a relaxed setting. The interior is sleek and modern, with streamlined tables and chairs, a cluster of low club chairs, and plenty of space to walk around. As long as the weather is still nice enough to enjoy it, there is a large outdoor area with long tables and two different lounge spaces – great for people watching. The layout is perfect for mingling or networking.

If you’re in the mood for great service, this isn’t the spot for you. Because the restaurant is cafeteria style, guests are responsible for serving themselves. It’s very easy to order food at the counter (keep in mind that the pasta tends to be bland and overcooked, but the pizzas are great). The bartenders manage to balance friendliness with efficiency, and the bar has a nice selection of liquor and wine, but the beer selection is slim (although it does cover a range of flavors).

A unique thing about VAPIANO is their payment system. When you walk in, the hostess gives each person a card that can be used to order at the bar or the food counters. Everything you order is then tallied onto the card so you can pay when you leave, making it very easy to split the bill if you’re with a large group.

VAPIANO is a great option if you’re looking to grab a quick bite to eat, or to socialize with friends or coworkers in a place where you won’t feel hovered over or rushed.
